Project X Zone 2 for 3. DS Reviews. I can sum this game in a word (or two, I never understood how you type it): Fanservice. And not of the boob type.
Sequel to the decent Project X Zone, this game is essentially a service for all the fans by making a huge cross over from different games from 3 companies (namco, capcom and Sega) and putting them into a single place for the sake of fanservice in a context of tactical rpg with not much depth BUT enough to keep you entertained. While the first game lacked a lot of stuff (the fights were long and boring, skills were hard to use cause of XP shared among all characters, no shop to buy items and mediocre writing), PXZ2 improves a lot over the predecessor in so many ways: fights are fast and hardly takes 3- 4 attempts on bosses to kill one; each solo and pair unit have customizable passives AND upgradeable attacks that you can spend points on; there's a shop to buy items after each fight and the lower screen is more useful than before, showing more information during the combat and also during your turn. One of the best things however, it's the writing: It's simply hilarious to find so many puns around games (thank you Xiaomu!) as well as lots of fun interactions between the characters: Vashyron hitting on all the girls around, Chris and Jill hoping to learn the "Big no Jutsu" from Valkyrie, or Lucina wanting to dress like Alisa.. It's essentially a fanboy/fangirl's wet dream and unlike the previous the writing is excellent, fun, well thought and I just keep smiling at the references. Plus, there's Segata Sanshiro and If I don't say this, he'll force me to buy a Sega Saturn.. But jokes aside, as you can probably see, the game has one major issue: it's fanservice.

If all of these are answered with a no then you see the issue here. I know most of the characters so I get the jokes and references but not everyone will. And to those I'm afraid this game will have nothing to offer and will lose half of its appeal, especially because of the lack in the tactical department. Yeah this game is a tactical rpg afterall, usually a very complex type pf game where you got a lot of customization going on: sadly the game doesn't really have that much and essentially becomes a matter of picking the most convenient skill and the best armor to be effective. Sure, some combinations are better than others but it doesn't make a huge difference: it's a very barebone tactical rpg that despite not being deep, it's actually pretty good for beginners who are sucky at it (like me).
So overall, I do recommend this game but ONLY to those who 1) played the first game and 2) to those who at least enjoy the characters portrayed in the game. The story in it isn't all that special but there are some references to the first (keyword being "Some") and a lot of the characters are from the previous game as well, or simply swapped to Solo (essentially a support) and put into Pair (2 characters that are into one unit). For example instead of Zephyr& Leanne we have Zephyr& Vashyron, with Leanne being Solo, or instead of Dante& Demitri we have Dante& Vergil; other returning couples are Chris& Jill, X& Zero and a few more in the likes of Chrom& Lucina, Kiryu& Majima, Hotsuma& Hiryu. Of course I can't forget mentioning Phoenix Wright& Maya as..

In the end, this game is good: I'm having a blast and it's everything I could ever want for a sequel, but if you're not a fan or simply don't care about these characters the RPG elements won't hold you long enough to feel rewarded, despite being quite a good tactical rpg for beginners. If you're looking for more complex tactical rpgs, this isn't the game for you. If you're looking for more serious story, this isn't the game for you. If you're looking for more original games, yet again, this game isn't for you. I can best describe this game as a guilty pleasure more than anything else so, pick it for what it is.
