Cependant, une jeune esclave nommée Patsey récolte 5. Sa beauté et son talent attirent l'attention de son maître, mais rendent jalouse la femme d'Epps ; celle- ci la défavorise et la frappe alors que son mari la viole de façon régulière. Lorsqu'une maladie s'abat sur le coton, attribuée par Epps à un signe de Dieu, l'esclavagiste loue ses esclaves à une plantation voisine pour la saison le temps que les cultures récupèrent.
Là encore, Solomon gagne les faveurs du propriétaire qui lui demande de jouer de son violon au cours de diverses occasions. Lorsque Solomon retourne à la plantation d'Epps, il tente d'utiliser le peu d'argent qu'il a pu récupérer ici et là pour convaincre un ancien contremaître blanc devenu ouvrier agricole d'envoyer une lettre à ses amis de New York. L'homme accepte et prend l'argent, avant de dénoncer Solomon à Epps. Après avoir réussi de justesse à convaincre son maître que l'histoire était fausse, Solomon brûle la lettre qui représentait son seul espoir de liberté. Dans le même temps, l'état de Patsey empire alors qu'Epps continue à abuser d'elle. Elle demande finalement de l'aide à Northup pour se suicider, ce que Solomon refuse. Un jour que Patsey a disparu de la plantation, Epps, fou de rage, interroge Solomon.
Lorsqu'elle réapparaît, expliquant qu'elle est juste allée chercher un morceau de savon, Epps ordonne à ses hommes de la déshabiller et de l'attacher à un arbre. Encouragé par sa femme, il s'apprête à la fouetter, mais il tend finalement le fouet à Solomon. Solomon obéit à contrecœur, avant qu'Epps ne lui arrache le fouet des mains et qu'il ne la batte violemment jusqu'à ce qu'elle s'évanouisse. Alors que le dos de Patsey guérit peu à peu, Solomon est affecté à la construction d'un pavillon sur la propriété d'Epps, en compagnie d'un travailleur canadien nommé Bass. Celui- ci se met Epps à dos lorsqu'il lui fait part de son opposition à l'esclavage, mais cela encourage Solomon à se confier à lui.
Il lui raconte son histoire et le convainc d'écrire à ses amis pour les informer de sa situation. Bass finit par accepter bien que cette perspective l'effraie. Alors qu'il travaille dans les champs de coton, Solomon est un jour appelé par le shérif local, qui l'interroge sur son passé. Après avoir répondu à une série de questions précises dont lui seul pouvait connaître la réponse, Solomon reconnaît le compagnon du shérif, un commerçant chez qui il avait l'habitude de faire ses achats.
Il se rend compte que l'homme a traversé le pays pour le libérer. Malgré les protestations et les menaces d'Epps et malgré la détresse de Patsey, Solomon quitte la propriété sur- le- champ. Après avoir été exploité pendant douze ans, il est à nouveau déclaré un homme libre et retourne vers sa famille. Les notes de la fin racontent le combat de Solomon pour faire condamner les hommes responsables de son calvaire, qui n'ont jamais été inquiétés par la justice. Nairy) flee, leaving behind Henry's injured brother Rey (Robert Pattinson). While driving away, Archie mocks Rey and Henry attacks him, causing Caleb to crash the truck in which they were riding. When they cannot manoeuvre the truck out of debris, they abandon it, and Archie steals the car belonging to mysterious loner Eric (Guy Pearce).
Eric manages to free the truck and follows them. After a brief chase, Archie stops and Eric confronts them. When Eric tries to attack Archie, Henry knocks him unconscious with a shotgun. Eric wakes up and drives the truck into town, where he wanders into several establishments, asking if they have seen the men. He goes to an opium den, where he finds a dwarf and two Chinese acrobats from a traveling circus in the backroom. Eric follows the dwarf to his trailer, where he offers Eric a gun for $3. Eric doesn't have $3.
After another confrontation with the opium den's owner, he walks back to his truck and finds Rey, who asks why he is in Henry's car. Eric asks Rey where Henry is, but Rey faints.
After seeking help from a shopkeeper, Eric takes Rey to a doctor (Susan Prior), who performs surgery on him. The doctor cares for abandoned dogs, which seems to interest Eric. The next day, Eric sees two vehicles approaching in the distance, senses threat, and takes the doctor's rifle.
The occupants of the vehicles turn out to be the traveling circus members seeking revenge for Eric's murder of the dwarf. They kill the doctor's companion without warning when he comes out to investigate. Eric opens fire and kills the acrobats. Eric then leaves with Rey. Eric and Rey stay at a motel in an almost- abandoned town.
While Eric is away from the room, Rey loads a revolver, then sees an Army vehicle driving down the street. He takes cover behind a bed and hears someone attempting to enter the room from outside. He shoots through the door and is shocked to find he has killed the daughter of the motel's owner. He is then shot at by a soldier (Nash Edgerton). Eric comes to the rescue, killing the soldier and driving Rey and himself away. While camping near an abandoned mine, Eric is arrested by a soldier (Anthony Hayes).

Eric tells the soldier that after finding his wife with another man, he killed them both; he is angry that the authorities seemed not to notice or care. The soldier ignores him. Rey breaks into the area, kills the two soldiers outside, then the soldier who was processing Eric. Eric and Rey escape.
Eric and Rey arrive at the town where Henry and the gang are hiding. They find Eric's car outside a house and break in. Eric holds Archie and Caleb at gunpoint, while Rey goes to confront Henry. After an argument, they shoot at each other; Rey misses, but Henry shoots Rey in the throat. Eric kills Archie and Caleb, before walking into Henry's room and finding Rey's corpse. He shoots Henry in the chest and burns the bodies.
Later, Eric pulls to the side of the road in his car. It is revealed that he was obsessed with finding the car because his dog's corpse was in the trunk. The film ends with Eric preparing to bury the dog in the desert. Guy Pearce as Eric, a violent and bitter former Australian soldier who has lost his farm and his family.
